Global Temperature for August was 0.1°C cooler than normal.  In August the earth’s mean temperature should be 3.32°C above the temperature proportional to the solar irradiance from the sun. The sun’s solar irradiance is proportional to 3.37°C.

1327 watts per square total solar irradiance, divided by 4 equal 331.73 watts per square meter (solar irradiance).

Global temperature was 6.59°C 43.86°F

Earths energy balance.

Earth’s thermal radiance is slightly higher than the global mean surface temperature equivalent. Regions of the earth becomes either above this amount or below.

Most of the suns heat is in the northern hemisphere, so to determine the absorbed amount (680 w-m2 (average amount) +summer excess 12.93w-m2 vs the outgoing amount (663.46, Solar input) + summer excess 16.54w-m2, below the average amount (680w-m2).

663w-m2(total) above 347w-m2 average (equals 1.01kw sunlight) spread across 40°S-85°N.

Absorption of visible light 42% 420w-m2 (in stratosphere) leaves 590 w-m2 (527w-m2 IR, 32w-m2 UV and 30w-m2 summer excess) for the earth's surface.

Breakdown of the Global Temperature

The northern hemisphere temperature was 16.21°C (Tropics 26°C + S.Polar region 6°C = 16°C).

The southern hemisphere temperature was -3.04°C (Tropics 26°C + S.Polar region -29°C = -3°C).

During August the earth cooled by 0.06°C, end of week 1 reached a high of 7.08°C, end of week 2 reached a low of 6.31°C.

The polar regions (millions square km snow and ice extents)

GT 6.48°C, 8.32 & 29.58

GT 7.08°C 7.80 (-0.52) & 30.24 (0.66) (0.14)

GT 6.65°C 7.39 (-0.41) & 30.69 (0.45) (0.04)

GT 6.31°C 7.02 (-0.37) & 30.73 (0.04) (-0.33)

GT 6.42°C 6.83 (-0.19) & 31.13(0.40) (0.21)

Hurricanes and tropical cyclones

Atlantic

Tropical Storm Dexter (Aug 4th – Aug 7th)

Category 5 Irwin was the only major hurricane. The Category 5 status lasted a short period after being a tropical storm 24 hrs prior to reaching category 3 status.

(Aug 11th- August 22nd)

Tropical Storm Fernand (Aug 23rd – Aug 28th

Pacific

Hurricane Henriette Cat 1 (Aug 4th – Aug 13th)

Tropical Storm Ivo(Aug 6th – Aug 11th)

Tropical Storm Juliette (Aug 24th – Aug 28th)
